Autodesk no longer support download links for 3dsmax9 so I will provide the links from my archive, contact me and I will send you a link to a trail version.
To get 3dsmax working and running.
If running from 64bit do;
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 winecfg
Do not install any winetricks repos the first time around with a clean wine prefix as with some versions max will install first time.
Otherwise do;
32bit machine;
winetricks msxml3 msxml6 dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
64bit machine;
env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 winetricks msxml3 msxml6 dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
When running the 3dsmax.exe installer de-select metal-ray satellite and continue as normal with the install process.
This works for wine version 1.6.2 with Ubuntu 15.04 32/64bit
Use the license import utility to transfer your windows 3dsmax9 license.
If 3dsMax9 doesn't work try this.
Fix: Use OpenGL as graphics mode.
Howto:
1) Save a new .reg file with these informations:
REGEDIT
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
"DisabledExtensions"="GL_KTX_
2) Type "wine regedit" in a shell window and "import" the .reg file previously saved.
3) Type "winecfg" in a shell window and check "Emulate a virtual desktop".
4) Type "wine 3dsmax.exe -h" and
choose OpenGL as graphics mode.
first time running of max will show a tutorial window; make sure you check the box "Don't show this again".
Keith (X-Seti) if your still having problems do a search for me on google.

WINEARCH=win32 winetricks
Select max9
Install d3dx9_26, dotnet20, vcrun6,2003-2010, msxml3, msxml6
Install 3dsMax9Trial.exe (don't install satellite service)
Install Hotfix 4 images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/3dsmax9_hf4_32.zip
Under ~/.local/share/wineprefixes/max9/drive_c/windows/winsxs/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.6161_none_deadbeef, add the missing file 'msvcp90.dll'
Add 'msvcp71' and 'msvcr71' to Wine overrides (native, builtin)
Run 3dsmax.exe with -h parameter, and select Software mode
To disable gnome's alt key:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
dconf-editor
Under 'org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences'
Clear 'mouse-button-modifier'
(Note: There's still the issue with the alt key opening the menu while the mouse button is pressed in the viewport, which is terribly annoying)

I have a problem with this program using Nvidia card. Through bumblebee (primus and virtualgl) and using new beta drivers with optimus support. It starts, loads plugins and when the window should be shown, everything crashes.
Problem occurs using wine 1.4.1 and some of the last betas in 1.5 series. Wine 1.6 not tested yet.
Someone else has this problem?

Do not install any winetricks repos the first time around.
Try winetricks msxml3 msxml6 dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
When running the exe installer for 3dsmax9 de-select metal-ray satellite, and continue as normal with the install process.
It should work like it did for me with wine 1.5.15.
Use the license import utility to transfer your windows 3dsmax9 license.

rm -rf .wine
sh winetricks corefonts dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
wine 3dsmax9Trial.exe
cd .wine/drive_c/3dsmax9Trial/
wine Setup.exe
After about five minutes, it got to the dialog that asks
questions, and crashed like this:

I also noticed this comment on the .NET page: appdb.winehq.org/commentview.php?iAppId=2586&iVersionId=3754&iThreadId=29635
However, I went into regedit and I didn't have to change anything, it was already correct.
I went back to the installer. This time it asks me if I want to Modify, Repair, or Remove the install. All this is leading me to believe that the install actually did work, despite the error.

wget kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks corefonts dotnet20
That seemed to work; I got confirmation pop-ups saying all these fonts got installed. It then installed .NET 2.0 and didn't notify me of any problems, if there were any.
I then ran the 3ds max 9 installer, which seemed to go fine until a point. It failed because of an error. I have the install log posted here josephjacir.com/stuff/3dsmax9_win32_Install.log (1.1MB) Is there a better place for this?
Just for the heck of it, I tried running the program. I uploaded the error output here: josephjacir.com/stuff/runmax.txt (again is there a better place for this?). What's weird is that the software gave me the standard crash handling window, which offers the chance to send the error report to Autodesk. This is the normal behaviour after a crash in Windows.
I am an experienced user of this software, and I hope to be of much more use in this effort when we get past the install stuff :)
