What works
forwarding notes from the last version I tested, Wine1.4
3dsmax installer works well without installing Sat-Ray (I skip this) in the installer.
The Render window (F9), Texturing (M), All Modeling Views and prospectives and plugin scripts shows bugged due to linux paths.
Direct X and software emulation works but slow.
Trial programs runs well, GUI can be buggy in places with the tear down bars.
What does not
Licenses activation window;
Missing and incomplete entry boxes needed for product activation.
As noted above the tear down bars can be buggy;
Overlapping bars can be hard to see on wine 1.6.2. You have to detach these bars to see them. (I have uploaded an image)
Mesh options window can not be seen when right clicking on the render window.
Open GL drivers do not work, crashes problem outright.
Missing window Gadgets, No Close, Resize, Minimalize.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Texture mapping as it's impossible to drag objects from the desktop onto the models surface.
Sat Ray options from the installer as this crashes 3dsmax9.
Other scripts and plugins as some may be 3rd party.
Hardware tested

Additional Comments
I can get 3dsmax 9 32bit running and with a working windows machine so I can port the license file so the product is activated. This is the thing; 32bit 3dsmax 9 you can only use a small part of memory. Larger render scene maps that I work with will not load due to memory limitations. The 64bit version of 3dsmax9 or later is a must have. but I am waiting for advances in wine before I can be able to install these versions. We get 3dsmax working check my notes; To Get 3dsmax Working!

Autodesk no longer support download links for 3dsmax9 so I will provide the links from my archive, contact me and I will send you a link to a trail version.
To get 3dsmax working and running.
If running from 64bit do;
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 winecfg
Do not install any winetricks repos the first time around with a clean wine prefix as with some versions max will install first time.
Otherwise do;
32bit machine;
winetricks msxml3 msxml6 dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
64bit machine;
env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 winetricks msxml3 msxml6 dotnet20 cc580 vcrun2003
When running the 3dsmax.exe installer de-select metal-ray satellite and continue as normal with the install process.
This works for wine version 1.6.2 with Ubuntu 15.04 32/64bit
Use the license import utility to transfer your windows 3dsmax9 license.
If 3dsMax9 doesn't work try this.
Fix: Use OpenGL as graphics mode.
Howto:
1) Save a new .reg file with these informations:
REGEDIT
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\
"DisabledExtensions"="GL_KTX_
2) Type "wine regedit" in a shell window and "import" the .reg file previously saved.
3) Type "winecfg" in a shell window and check "Emulate a virtual desktop".
4) Type "wine 3dsmax.exe -h" and
choose OpenGL as graphics mode.
first time running of max will show a tutorial window; make sure you check the box "Don't show this again".
