What works

All Dictionary functions

What does not

Help search authors: clicking on the alphabet buttons does not work but Authors lists can be displayed by using the navigation arrows in the applications toolbar. The font display is very small on the help screens

Help does not work unless *.HLP files are copied to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows or symlinked

Fonts will not display correctly unless moved to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts but this is a known issue with the original windows application and is noted in the README.TXT file

Additional Comments

This is an old application but as I paid £30 for a legal copy in 1997 (a few months before it was 'free' on a magazine cover) I no more wish to throw it away than I would the printed second edition that cost me £25 in 1974. It works with Linux, the last need for windows has gone.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

No problems to install using Wine. As it is a Win3.1 application it is best to create an installation directory with a DOS8.3 style name for installation rather than use 'Program Files' eg

mkdir ~/.wine/drive_c/PROGRAMS

After installing copy the dictionary data file DATA/NEWSOEDS.AND from the CD-ROM to ~/.wine/drive_c/PROGRAMS/SOED/DATA/NEWSOEDS.AND and then edit ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/NEWSOED.INI . Change the 'DataFile=' line to indicate the new location eg

DataFile=C:\PROGRAMS\SOED\DATA\NEWSOEDS.AND

Move the fonts that the installer has placed in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows to ~/.wine/drive_c/fonts

Create symlinks in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows to the help files (AUTHORS.HLP, GUIDE.HLP, NEWSOED.HLP) in ~/.wine/drive_c/PROGRAMS/SOED
