What works

install was fine although required a bit of mucking around mounting the disc to get the disc detected during install (including using the 'drives' section of winecfg sometimes)
career mode

What does not

unable to patch to 1.3 directly, was able to launch the game to a black screen with the mouse cursor after install, but never got beyond that. Also had to disable directx as per how to.

Workarounds

To patch the game, I had to install in a windows vm (I had one ready to go so it was 'fine', except that I had to use windows lol), this was frustrating but worked fine on windows 10 (as long as you disable direct x during the game install same as for wine). There was a load of missing dlls which prevented the 1.3 patch from applying from within wine itself (patch was looking for user32.dll, secur32.dll, and a whole bunch more). After the game was patched, I added the widescreen fix. The 1.3 patch can be obtained from a number of third party websites, I used the one from moddb. I have the cd's for the retail version so I did not look to apply the no cd patch although it would make life easier. Once all this was done, I copied the whole need for speed most wanted folder from windows to linux and was able to launch the game and start playing so I guess the regkeys are optional lol. You need to override dinput8 in winecfg for the widescreen fix to work properly as per the instructions in the thirteenag github repo

once the game is setup it runs nicely :)

1. Go to AutoRun folder and open 'autorun.cfg' file.

2. Edit row 'DirectXVersion=9.0c' to 'DirectXVersion=0'
