Max Payne

What works

• Set up a 32-bit wine prefix
• Set windows XP as target
• Install and patch to 1.05
• Play
• Load
• Save

Tested both with wine-staging-7.18 and wine-7.0

What does not

1. Launching with non patched always complains about CD not found
2. Open files limit: Too many files opened -> the process hangs
3. Can't launch if no virtual desktop provided: xinput can't access keyboard
4. Open jpeg broken on ryzen 5600g: lot of error message about invalid jpeg
5. Unable to read data\database -> quit
6. Mouse wheel not usable

Workarounds

/etc/security/limits.d/80-custom.conf

user hard nofile 8192

log out current session and check from shell

$ ulimit -Hn
8192

# Unable to read \data\database\xxx

Download MaxPaynePacker

from terminal, go to your game install directory, press 1 to unpack after each call to MaxPaynePacker.exe

extracting take a while, but file size seem not to be increased

$ wine MaxPaynePacker.exe x_data.ras
$ rm -f archive.ras
$ wine MaxPaynePacker.exe x_music.ras
$ rm -f archive.ras x_music.ras
$ #Optional localisation (french for me)
$ wine MaxPaynePacker.exe x_french.ras
$ rm -f archive.ras x_french.ras
$ mv ras/data .
$ rm ras -rf

# Open jpeg broken on ryzen
