What works

Fresh install, everything works - no work arounds needed. You can even use a USB HID device fine. I dug out my old Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick to play the game, and also tried a USB game pad (not as much fun as the old school joystick though). No work arounds were needed to select the video driver (I seen a report that it may crash when you try to configure the video - I didn't experience it).

I didn't try the game with the video to set to Direct 3D Direct Draw drivers (I just used the first option which was Open GL)

Dug the game up from the grave as I wanted to play something different and nostalgic. I did uncover one (very small) problem. The loader causes buffer overruns to the sound system as it makes noise when you move the mouse over the selection buttons. It's not a big deal unless you roll the mouse around a lot over all the selection buttons on the game loader continuously for approximately 30 seconds - then (and only then) the loader may crash due to all the buffer overruns. My Wine is configured for ALSA, and I didn't try any of the other sound system selections (not sure if the overruns are limited to the ALSA system or my ALSA configuration). The loader will not crash otherwise (ie: loading it and letting it sit there). So when the loader appears, select what you want do do (ie: Setup or Play) instead of rolling the mouse around over all the buttons continuously for 30 seconds... If your using a modern video card, then don't forget to go into the options menu and max out everything for the video settings once in the game. ;-)
