What works

I installed ver. 1.0, then the patch to 1.2b:

Installer works to the point where shortcuts are created. Multiple windows pop up and are closed and then a message box pops up which says: "Runtime Error '24': ActiveX component can't create object.". Shortcuts are created on desktop but only the shortcut to "Register game at ubisoft" is created in gnome-menu.

Patch installation works flawless.

Game can not be started without no-cd crack (no error messages or anything else). With no-cd crack game crashes shortly after the splash screen with a message box which only says 'general protection fault' and nothing more. I tried two different no-cd cracks with the same error.

What does not

Starting the game and obviously playing it.

HowTo / Notes

How to fix lighting and shadow effects.

For Windows and Linux systems who have newer video cards:

The shadow placements may be incorrect and therefore spotlight beams, flash light beams and ceiling light beams may not appear.

To fix this do the following:

  1. In the game folder go to SYSTEM folder and open SplinterCell.ini file with text editor.
  2. Find block [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
  3. Add or change (if string exists) ForceShadowMode=1 to ForceShadowMode=0
  4. Save the edited file
PlayStation 3 HD textures

The textures from the PlayStation 3 port of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell are higher definition and can be installed by overwriting the existing textures.

The HD textures are mostly faithful to the original textures.
