What works
See Extra Steps.
Installs, runs, Initial Product Update works, got Registration working.
Online updates - was able to download some credit card TXNs from a Credit Card that was already configure for one-step updates!!
Still need some work/help..
What does not
Adding my account which, previously in Quicken 2005,had to use QFX files for. But you know they stopped that fun and made us pony up for 2008.
This product is VERY graphics-intensive, and has lots of screen-refreshes which seem to make it somewhat slow on my 2Ghz 512MB Pentium4
Trying to enable the financial institution resulted in some sort of error and what appeared to be the classic "Unexpected termination/Send error to Microsoft?" dialogue.
Also, see Extra Steps, once "IE" is invoked, wineserver consume a ton of CPU.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Printing, reports, and a lot of other stuff.
Will post back if I can get past the IE issues and get this up a few clicks in the ratings.
Additional Comments:
This is still a work-in-progress, but here's how I did this.
1) Back up Quicken Data. Back it up again just to be sure :)
2) Create a NEW "wine" install using ies4linux.
**DO NOT TRY TO SPECIFY AN EXISTING WINEPREFIX WHEN INSTALLING IES4LINUX ** It has an "rm -f -r" command for the target you specify. (rm -f -r=remove force recursive, but you made two backups, right??).
3) Use WineTricks to install the PowerPoint viewer (this installs the needed GDIPLUS.dll). Also choose Flash.
4) NOW you are ready to run the Quicken 2008 install.
5) After install, Get the Quicken updates
6) Open your data file and Register Quicken.
Notes: The Quicken Registration page uses Quicken as a COM object within the Registration javascript - this appears to be why you MUST have IE, and why the winegecko browser isn't good enough, I think..
If you don't want to register to use the online stuff, skip the IES4LINUX and, using WineTricks, just install GDIPLUS, Flash, and the GeckoBrowser.
