What works

Seems to install and run just fine, installer loads up, downloads files, installs to the correct location, game launches properly, log-in screen works perfectly, options screen works. Game loading screen works fine. Actual game appears to work perfectly and much better than I expected because the graphic quality is as good as Windows was on medium / high settings. The game's networking system seems to work flawlessly, installing from the client with no guild wars DVDs worked perfectly and fast, no slow networking. Game play is fast and smooth. Very very nice indeed, this is the best i've seen Guild Wars work certainly on par with commercial Wine versions. Changing interface size option works. Standard settings work well.

What does not

The game does not appear to detect everything about the graphics card available. It uses a correct resolution which is compatible with the screen and lists available resolutions fine but switching to windowed mode on the options screen takes me to my desktop with a black window. The game music is still playing so it doesn't seem to have died, but switching to the window just shows the mouse cursor (guild wars cursor) which seems to show for the whole screen as if the resolution didn't really switch. I have yet to experiment with changing other graphic settings but the standard settings display fine on my screen. Minimizing the game does not seem to work properly either - I believe this is again to do with switching to window mode. There was a slight delay once when loading the game between the login screen appearing and the mouse cursor showing, right clicking helped make it appear (as seen on a bug for transgaming Cedega commercial wine product), I have not seen this persistently though.

What was not tested

Changing screen resolutions and advanced graphics options like AA / Shadows / Texture quality. PVP Mode. Changing character in game / Choosing different characters after login. Installing from the DVDs (I can test this if required).

Additional Comments

I gave this bronze because the window issue (above) is a problem for the game but otherwise it runs, installs, loads etc exactly as the windows version and flawlessly in my opinion. I'm new to wine ratings so I'm being conservative. Lack of window mode support does let it down but I feel most users will stick to fullscreen when gaming. ---------------------- Fedora experience by Ed Gray on Friday June 20th 2008, 18:19 Just to add to my submission about the game working with some exceptions. On Fedora 8 as I said in my submission the game runs fine except switching to window mode and a possible mouse cursor issue on the login screen. It seems window mode is fine but switching to window mode or minimizing from fullscreen causes the blank window so that's what's broken. Perhaps this is to do with changing screen resolution or window management / opengl and switching between windows. Also Eye of the north also works pretty flawlessly (apart from said window mode issue) and heroes and everything work. Also videos work perfectly! I am so impressed wine team :P this makes all the money I've spent on Transgaming Cedega and Codeweavers Crossover Mac worth every penny :) I have used Cedega / Crossover in the past seems i don't have to now.

HowTo / Notes

NOTE: Guild Wars usually doesn't require any special settings to get working. The advice listed below is only for those who require help installing, running, or troubleshooting Guild Wars.

Simply use the installer found at Unzip the installer and run it using Wine:

wine GwSetup.exe

WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

WINEDEBUG=-all will stop the flood of fixme messages generated from normal use. If you require debugging, omit this option.

  • Make sure 3D works in native applications before blaming Wine. Try glxgears, or a 3D game such as etracer or supertuxkart.
  • Use the latest version of Wine. Type 'wine --version' to check.
  • Use the latest version of your graphics driver.
  • Try different versions of Windows in winecfg, such as Windows XP and 98.
  • Under the winecfg Graphics tab, try experimenting with the window settings if you have window/resizing issues. It is recommended to run the game in a virtual desktop for performance and other reasons.
  • Turn off Compiz Fusion or KDE desktop effects.
  • "Guild Wars has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error and must terminate" (bug #12870) is caused by fglrx, not Wine.
  • OSS graphics drivers (aka radeon/radeonhd/nouveau/intel) will provide poor performance with wine games, it is recommended to use the binary nvidia driver or fglrx for ATI.

If you are having graphics issues, use regedit to try some registry keys:

  • UseGLSL=disabled (Use this if you have a low end graphics card, Intel graphics, or if you are having performance problems.)
  • DirectDrawRenderer=opengl (Already the default with up to date versions of Wine)
  • OffscreenRenderingMode=fbo (Already the default with up to date versions of Wine)
  • Multisampling=enabled (Already the default with up to date versions of Wine)
  • RenderTargetLockMode=auto

Appending these flags to the run command may help you:

  • -dx8 - Uses DirectX 8
  • -noshaders - Disabled shaders, along with -dx8 this will improve performance (but make the game look pretty bad)
  • -dsound - Uses DirectSound
  • -nosound - Disables sound

Other tips:

  • In Options > Graphics, set the refresh rate to 60hz or the highest you have listed that is within your monitors range and turn on vsync for improved responsiveness in some cases.

Using FBO as the ORM crashes with fglrx drivers

This is not a Wine bug, it is a fglrx bug. Please do not open a bug for this, it will just be closed.

See the fglrx bug for more details, or check the HOWTO for this app for a workaround.
