HOWTO fix black screen

If you start the game and the intro videos play but then the screen goes black, you may need to enable S3 texture compression. To do so:

  1. Install driconf.
  2. In your system's Preferences menu, open 3D Acceleration.
  3. Under the Image Quality tab, set Enable S3TC texture compression even if software support is not available to Yes.
  4. Run Call of Duty 2. The menu should now work normally.
  5. In the game's Options menu under Graphics, set Force DirectX 7 Mode to Yes.

COD2 works on Ubuntu 18.04 with AMD/ATI Radeon HD7850 after moving from Wine 3.0 to wine-4.0-rc5
by Chris K. on Wednesday January 9th 2019, 22:35
I struggled for days to get Call of Duty 2 (and Modern Warfare, Waw) working on Wine but saw massive graphics corruption / artifacts, etc. when using the Wine 3 "stable" version with basically a stock installation of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
I noticed that these games were highly rated by others on Wine APP DB but I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. After installing the development version, I was very pleased that these graphics issues were resolved and hopefully I won't see them come back.
It was not necessary to use any of the special things like winetricks, special DLL Overrides, etc.

Lag in multiplayer
by BitMaster on Friday July 27th 2012, 20:36
I should add: To fix the lag in (especially) multiplayer, run the game on 1 CPU only.

I use this command (edit to your needs):
env WINEPREFIX="/opt/games/cod2" WINEDEBUG=-all taskset -c 1 wine start /Unix CoD2MP_s.exe +set com_introplayed 1

'taskset -c 1' indicates the game should run on only one core.

Thank you!!!! Thank you!! :D

I played COD2 1.3 a long time over lan with my friends (Windows users) on Wine 1.2.2 on lowest settings in DX7, because Wine 1.3 and 1.4 lags on my laptop.

Now I can play COD2 1.3 on Wine 1.4 in DX9 with AA! :)

core2duo 8200@2.66ghz
2GB 800Mhz drr2 ram
asus geforce 9600gt

game: cod2 MP(original, german) patched to 1.3
settings: details on extra, dx7, 1280x1024, no AA...
FPS: 80-180
FPS under windows xp(same config): 250+
errors: some graphical models (grass) aren't the way they are sepost to be

bdw: cod2 always had a mayor fps drop in DX9 mode(i think the first graphic cards that had an exceptable fps for online play were the 7600gt) and multicore support came in a patch(cod2 1.0 doesn't have it)

Patch 1.3 include also the fix to dual core processors.

by Marc W. on Sunday May 3rd 2009, 7:44
Hi, under Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) CoD2 runs excellent! After Upgrading to 9.04/Jaunty CoD2 freezes after a few minutes. Is always freezes, when a special Sound is beeing played. What might be the problem? Shall I open a new bugreport? My Hardware: AMD AthlonXP64, Geforce 8600GTS

Can someone confirm this problem?

Have you tried to ask on the Ubuntu Forum?
RE: Problems after upgrading to Jauntuy
by Marc W. on Monday May 18th 2009, 1:59
Yes, the first guess was the changed soundsystem (ALS -> pulseaudio). But then I realised, that punkbuster was still enabled from former testing. That seemed to be the reason for the freezes.
Sry bout that!

Install COD2
by Derek Walker on Thursday January 22nd 2009, 12:13
I was installing the game and while it was installing with disk one in it gave me an error with the window called "Feature transfer error" saying:

"error:-1603 Fatal error during installation.

Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information."

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and Wine 1.1.13.

What can I do to complete the installation?

Try to copy installation files from CD/DVD to HDD and restart installation.

Yes, if when you run it, doesn't start so run with '-dxlevel81' parameter. ;-)
ATI cards
by Daniel Vasarhelyi on Friday July 11th 2008, 2:13
Have anybody be able to run this game on ATI card? I'm going to try, and it would be nice to see what problems will I possibly facing.

RE: ATI cards
by SheeEttin on Friday July 11th 2008, 9:12
Runs fine on my Radeon X1600 Pro.

It crashes whenever I shoot someone or get shot, though I don't think that's the fault of my graphics card. (More likely the finicky nature of Wine.)

Any progress on getting Punkbuster to work properly?
