What works

Game was already installed, so I was only testing the latest Wine release to ensure it still works: in which case NOTHING.

What does not

Under Wine 1.1.41, the game will not execute. Wine will crash the X server causing the display manager to restart and needing you to re-login. It did run fine under 1.1.40, and still runs fine under 1.1.31 from the Ubuntu repository.

As already mentioned, since the game was already installed, I did not test the installer.

HOWTO fix black screen

If you start the game and the intro videos play but then the screen goes black, you may need to enable S3 texture compression. To do so:

  1. Install driconf.
  2. In your system's Preferences menu, open 3D Acceleration.
  3. Under the Image Quality tab, set Enable S3TC texture compression even if software support is not available to Yes.
  4. Run Call of Duty 2. The menu should now work normally.
  5. In the game's Options menu under Graphics, set Force DirectX 7 Mode to Yes.
