The furthest I can get
by S Bayer on Friday March 14th 2008, 23:26
Okay, heres the steps I took to get the furthest I could possible go.

Before starting, i would begin on step 3 downloading the patch, then come back up top :p

1. I made sure I got directx 9 up by doing this...

download and install a DirectX DLL

wget www.m3fe.com/files/d3dx9_34.zip
unzip d3dx9_34.zip -d ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/

set d3dx9_34.dll as native in winecfg/libraries

2. Install Hellgate London

I put in the cd and just right click on "Setup.exe" and choose run under wine. I did a standard install.

3. Download and Install Patch

US patch = downloads.hellgatelondon.com/patches/standalone/multiplayer/Patch_NA_Europe_Germany_MP_1.0_(1.0.27.4101.a).exe

4. Put these two files into your \hellgate london\Data\ folder, to get around the error for region and language.

www.rapidshare.com/files/89424496/language.dat.html
www.rapidshare.com/files/89424497/region.dat.html

5. Cry to Zeus that this game isnt compatable :(

Aparrently theres a bug listing that gets people into game, but its over my head, if anyone can explain this page to me heres a link...

You don't need to pick out a random directx-dll to use it natively. Also if you only want to play in SP mode, there's no need for copying the region.dat. If you want to play MP-mode then you don't necessarily need to do that either, it's just that due to the missing mouse support you can't change the server in the multiplayer login screen. That's what you might need to copy the region.dat for.
I have no idea what you mean by 'this game isn't compatible', like no one can guess what isn't working for you. Like do you get the loading screen lockup, is something up with the intro videos, are you surprised that the cursor isn't working, ...

Well both Dominik and I have gotten Hellgate London SP-mode to run but since the mouse isn't working at all you can't call this 'playing the game'. MP mode fails because of a connection error (err:wininet:NETCON_secure_connect couldn't verify the security of the connection, 20) and the missing mouse support.

For details on how we got that far you can read our comments on this very page. :> Good luck! :>
