What works

All basic functions: Creating, editing, formatting, printing, and saving presentations. Copying and pasting text and objects. Spellcheck and thesaurus. Inserting pictures from a file, sound from a .wav file, autoshapes, wordart, diagrams, tables, organization charts. Design templates, color schemes, and animation schemes. Creating slide shows, including custom animation. Macros.

What does not

Clip organizer. Inserting pictures from a scanner or camera, sound other than .wav, movies.  Help. Excel charts can be inserted, but they are not visibly rendered on the slide. Rendering of graphics is slower than normal in edit mode (bug 20882), but not so slow as to be a problem. Graphics render normally in slideshow view.

Additional Comments

Office 2003 Pro.

• Set riched20 to native after installing (needed for thesaurus). There is no need to copy the dll or use winetricks; Office 2003 installs its own riched20.dll, but the override must be set in winecfg for Wine to use it. Do not set the override globally unless you have Office installed in a separate wineprefix.

• All but two of the default bullet characters are from Wingdings. If you want them to look the same as on Windows, install that font.

• ­Set gdiplus to native, builtin for inserted graphics to display and print  properly. There is no need to install gdiplus, as Office 2003 installs its own version. This override is not needed for earlier versions of Wine, as prior to 1.1.38 the default behavior was to favor gdiplus that was installed ­by the app itself.­  Do not set the override globally unless you have Office installed in a separate wineprefix. If using native gdiplus causes Powerpoint to crash, the most likely cause is nonconformant ttf fonts installed on your system. (Ubuntu in particular is known to be afflicted.) Run winetricks fontfix to fix this.
­
• For mp3 sound to play out of the box, you must have 32 bit libmpg123 installed on your system and Wine must have been compiled with mp3 support. Not all dis­tro packag­es provide this. ­­The workaround for lack of winemp3.acm is to use the codec installed by WMP9,  l3cod­eca.acm. Copy l3codeca.acm to the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory (or use winetricks to install WMP9), then create a symlink to it named winemp3.acm in the same directory.

• To insert and play movies (wmv, avi, mpg), you must have the necessary 32 bit gstreamer-plugins installed on your system. The specific gstreamer-plugins you will need will depend on what codecs your videos are encoded with ("good," "bad," and "ugly" are likely candidates); check the console output for messages about missing gstreamer plugins if audio and/or video playback fails. If you are on a 64 bit system, make sure that you have the 32 bit versions of the plugins installed. (Note that older versions of Wine required the installation of codec packs into the wineprefix for video to work in Powerpoint; this is no longer necessary.) ­

• ­In current Wine, wmv and mpg files can be inserted and played in Powerpoint without any tweaks, but inserting and playing avi files requires the installation of Windows Media Player (9 or 10) to the wineprefix. ­
