Really nice car racing game (my favorite in this genre). Runs with some restrictions. German game, intl. version sold under name Breakneck.

What works

Sound works.

Game Controllers.  Tested 2 different Thrustmaster wheels and a Gravis joystick.

Graphics rendering has to be set to use "Software Engine."

What does not

Direct rendering graphics.  Attempts to get it to use DirectX or OpenGL produced screen garbage and killed sound output from the game.  Had to trash my Wine "Windows" folder and reinstall to fix it.

Force Feedback doesn't work.

Some of the fan-made add-on tracks have distorted rendering of the road surface, but it doesn't affect game play.

In-game configuration of game controller axes (X,Y,Z).  If you attempt to assign them within the game you'll disable them on your controller and have to edit the registry to get them back.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Modes other than "Single Race" and "Arcade Game."
Multi-player network game wasn't tested (I never got it to work very well under Windows anyway)

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU:
  • Driver:

Additional Comments

Don't try to install game controller drivers/utilities in Wine, I can just about guarantee you'll disable the X/Y/Z axes of your controller by doing so. Just plug in your controller and calibrate it in Linux with "jscal -c" in the terminal. If your controller axes are still missing you'll need to get binary configuration data for that controller off a working Windows system running the game and enter it in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYNETIC\HAND\V2\Input" (the HKEY_CURRENT_USER joystick entries for the Wine registry don't work for this game)
