Install from DVD, run program, menus, opening animations, racing - career mode and solo race days (see note below). Did not test online or multiplayer. Occasionally momentarily freezes, but always comes back to life after 2-3 seconds.
To get the actual racing (career, race days) working, I had to use a workaround, otherwise it crashes on loading the race. I followed some instructions to modify a few settings relating to Direct3d in the registry, as seen here;
or in the image;
You will need to create the key in the Registry. It takes about 1 minute. After that, everything works great. I can have resolution and all effects at maximum on my Acer 5738G laptop (C2D 2.8Ghz??, 4Gb, Nvidia G105M video), and the refresh rate seems to be pretty good.
Some people have suggested you need beta graphics drivers (e.g. Nvidia 1.85 beta), however I was using stock Nvidia 1.80 drivers from Ubuntu restricted. I also used a brand new stock wine folder. Seems to work the same with or without d3d9 override, and with or without a N0 DVD patch, so DRM is not an issue.
What does not
Nothing I could find, apart from the crash before changing registry settings (see "What works").
What was not tested
Online/multiplayer, but seemed to contact the server OK.
Version 1.1 - the 1.1 patch from the EA website doesn't seem to update the nfs.exe file, but this could be permission related (?).
Running Ubuntu 32bit.
