At this point in Ubuntu 7.10 sound seems to drop out for an unexplained reason. Normally rebooting the computer will fix it, but this should not be necessary, even restarting the X-server would be a little much. I am working on it, but have no fix at this time.

Apparently this is an OS issue having to do with ALSA. Should you encounter this problem merely resetting ALSA should do the trick.
