Make sure you're using the proper video drivers for your hardware, and configured properly. Using Ubuntu's default Mesa driver, the application draws very slowly as there's tons of visible controls in this app. On my system which uses an nVidia 7800GS OC, the proprietary drivers make a huge difference. Also suggest disabling the real-time spell checker, as it can be a little slow as well. That aside, I use this program daily, and it runs perfectly out of the box.
