HowTo / Notes

Installer doesn't work?
In order to install the game, you must first set the Windows version to Windows 95.
The install will not work on recent versions of Wine (maybe due to the dropping of Win9x support). It is reported to also fail on Windows 7 64-bit. However it is enough to copy the 'roadrash' folder from the CD and to add some registry entries:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\RoadRash 95]
@=""
"Path"="X:\\1"
"CheckDialup"=hex:00
"ChatState"=hex:02
"MiniDash"=hex:00
"OpponentList"=hex:01
Set "Path" to your CD drive (e.g. "D:\\1") or to your game folder (e.g. "C:\\Games\\RoadRash") if you are using a NoCD.
Setting up MIDI musics
The race musics are in MIDI format, you need to install and *configure* a midi synth (such as timidity or fluidsynth). See the MIDI page on Wine Wiki.

This game did not work for me in a current version of Wine. (for example 1.7.4). I got a segmentation fault every time I started it. Instead I ran it in a highly outdated version 1.3.27 - the game runs fine here. Just install an older version of Wine to a different directory and use that version's wine binary to run RashMe.exe. Make sure that the Wine prefix is configured for Windows 95 emulation.

To get the full motion videos to play, your display resolution must be set to 640x480 via your video card's driver settings. (So I highly recommend playing the game on an old 4:3 monitor.) You can define a meta-mode in xorg.conf and then use xrandr to switch to 640x480 resolution and back with a simple console command that you can put into your startup script for the game.

In order to make the MIDI music during the racing stages play you need to run a software MIDI synthesizer like timidity++. Most distros should come with it preinstalled but with a crappy soundfount, you should download an alternate one online to improve the quality of the instruments. Run timidity at system startup time with

timitiy -iA
