Application Name Description version Downloads
GensDataPro

GensDataPro is a dedicated software package for keeping genealogical (family history) data and associated files like scans of documents and photographs.
It also features many output reports and conversion possibilities to other genealogical file formats. It has a long history, and is based on the older DOS programs GD90 and gensdata.
The interface is [for now] only available in the Dutch language. The combination of a well tuned database for storing genealogical data, end a superb user interface make it in my [maybe biased] view one of the best software packages of its type.
This software is developed for the Dutch genealogical society (NGV).
A demo version suitable for up to 250 persons can be downloaded free of charge.

There are a couple of Linux alternatives:

  • Gramps (Debian package) - XML-based, written in Python. Good data-model (reads all of GEDCOM 5.5).
  • GeneWeb (Debian package) - Written in OCaml, with CGI interface. Simpler data-mode, but handles 400k-name families without trouble.
