Baldur's Gate | The story takes place in TSR's best-selling FORGOTTEN REALMS. The western shore along the Sea of Swords contains a multitude of ecologies and terrains including mountains, forests, swamps, marshes, plains, cities, and ruins. Collectively called the Sword Coast, it attracts adventurers and evil alike, and is the backdrop for this epic adventure. The region encompassed by this game is roughly bordered to the South by the Cloud Peaks, the East by the Wood of Sharp Teeth, the West by the Sea of Swords, and the North by Baldur's Gate (the largest and most affluent city in the region). Chaos threatens to overwhelm the Sword Coast. The state of Amn is under siege to the south, the High Moor is being overrun in the north, and the region around Baldur's Gate is in turmoil. In an area known for its ample resources, a crippling shortage is slowly developing for the metal that is used throughout the Realms for everything from swords to forks - iron. When iron ore reaching the region is smelted, the resulting wares are plagued with brittleness such that they crack and break with little more than normal use. What's worse, trading caravans coming from all directions into Baldur's Gate are under constant attack from bandits and cutthroats who loot not for gold and gems (although they often take those too...), but for iron. The armed factions in Baldur's Gate can scarcely keep themselves armed and the commoners are suffering all the more. Without iron they cannot mend their tools or purchase plows - and everyone knows that if they cannot farm or craft, they will starve come winter. Some blame Amn for the chaos, others the trading cartels, and still others suspect even the Dukes of Baldur's Gate. Yet, this contagion may be an early omen of some greater evil... The player starts the game with one character. This character can be generated using any of the races, classes, and alignments allowed by ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. Up to five other adventurers may join the central character as the epic quest proceeds. The player begins in the glorious castle of Candlekeep, an orphan seeking self-knowledge. Although once a stolid coastal fortress, Candlekeep is now a great library
filled with endless dusty tomes and crusty sages. The player is led out of the
keep by a mentor into the wilds of the Sword Coast, and the adventure begins...

The game is digitally distributed on several channels. Introversion is selling the game as a direct download, and it is also available through Steam.
Introversion also sells a boxed version; this contains the game media

Description from GOG.com:
Join the Brotherhood of Steel, a technological revival group dedicated to restoring the world to its former prosperity through science and whatever means necessary. Take part in a quest to reawaken long-dormant technology in order to defeat a powerful enemy in the one of a kind Fallout Universe. Each mission involves various hostile obstacles that must be overcome using tactical skirmish warfare. The player controls up to six detailed characters in the single player mission-based campaign or they may use their chosen squad online in multiplayer battles. Squad-members improve with experience, increasing their skills and earning perks. Many varieties of weapons, from handguns to rocket launchers, allow the player to lay waste to his enemies. In addition, the fighting isn't limited to pedestrians, as squad-members may take the action to the streets with armed vehicles. As a Brotherhood of Steel initiate you will challenge hordes of ghouls, mutants and other radioactive nightmares. Always outgunned and outnumbered you will fight in hopes of restoring humanity. You're in the army now... so, welcome to the Wasteland! You are the wretched refuse. You may be born from dirt, but we will forge you into steel. You will learn to bend, if not you will break. In these dark times, the Brotherhood - your Brotherhood – is all that stands between the rekindled flame of civilization and the howling, radiated Wasteland. Your weapons will become more than your tools, they will become your friends. You will use your skills to inspire the lowly and protect the weak... whether they like it or not. Your squadmates will be more dear to you than your kin and for those who survive there will be honor, respect and the spoils of war.

Freelancer | The setting for this "space opera" game is the 23rd Century, which in a galactic time-frame can be roughly described as just before the insanity that was Buck Rogers and just after the Space Odyssey. A civil war has ripped Earth and our Solar System apart for more than 100 years, claiming millions of casualties. At the end, the losing faction, the Aliance, in a desperact act sends several sleeper ships off to deep space with hundreds of people and enough equipment to allow them to start over. Nearly a thousand years after the colonies started you get to prosper in the flurishing economy of both legal and illegal factions. Growing relations with them on the way, staying neutral is a challange in it self. Trading, bounty hunting, mining, missions or looting. Some of many things waiting for you to explore. | 1.x | |

You'll have to fix up your moth with enough power to leave, working either as a scavenger, a trader, a pirate, a bounty hunter or whatever you choose. Controls are not as complex as other sims, and the whole economics of the moon make it a very replayable game. An atmospheric game that has been called the best of the Elite-types. Total Annihilation | A great real-time strategy game, in 3d and using physics, that runs great, even on a netbook.
Total Annihilation was one of the first 3d real-time strategy games. It has massive maps, compared to Starcraft for example, the units really are 3d, rather than isometric projections, which were common at the time. There are aircraft, artillery, long-range naval weapons, super weapons, nuclear missiles, anti-nuke, ...
Even today, Total Annihilation stands out, and doesn't look dated graphically. The music is awesome, played by a real symphony orchestra, and composed especially for the game. There are two expansions: Core Contingency, and Battle Tactics. Total Annihilation on Wine runs fluidly, and feels like it is running natively. It runs just great on a netbook, even one of the old ones with a 800x480 screen, with the music, and without needing a cd player.

X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter | The Successor of of X-Wing and TIE-Fighter, and the Predecessor of X-Wing Alliance, this game was the wirst Star Wars space sim featuring Multiplayer and 3D Graphics, actually, it was developed to bring missions from X-Wing and TIE-Fighter into Multiplayer, therefore players of the older games will recognise some situations, though it does not feature the TIE-Defender and the Missile Boat from TIE-Fighter as well as the B-Wing form the B-Wing expansion of X-Wing due to balancing reasons, which also made this game feel a bit slow compared to TIE-Fighter. It Supports IPX and TCP/IP for multiplayer, of course you can play all Missions against AI. Those missions divide in three types, Training (which gives you some objectives and explanations concerning the use of your crafts various systems), Melee (which mainly is about groups of starfighters competing each other) and Fight (which gives your group and the enemy group certain objectives) There is also a tournament option, which sends you into a adjustable number of melees and sums up the points of each player, AI included and the battle mode, which determines the winner by adding up victories in fights. For Victories you achieve badges or trophys, that are summed up ion your Pilots records, which you can use to compensate your small... umh, yeah, you can use it to compare yourself with others, but theres no further use for it. like in all games of the series, there is a database of all ships you can encounter (which isnt exactly everything that you can fly ;)) note: there is no storyline, just a bunch of missions to fly with others and/or AI | GOG |
